Computers and Technology: A Prospective Look

Computers, the internet, and information technology are the stars of the millennium era. As part of our daily lives, they are an integral part of our lives. To honor them, I present a variety of prospective reflections on computers and technology in this article.

Here they are:

  • People control technology in two different ways: those who manage what they don't understand, and those who understand what they don't manage.

  • It is impossible to distinguish between magic and technology at a sufficiently advanced level.

  • Automating an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. Automating an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency. This is the first rule of any technology used in business.

  • There are no meaningful distinctions anymore between information technology and business. They are inextricably intertwined.

  • Faith in people matters more than anything else since they are good and smart and will work wonders with tools if you trust them.

  • It happens occasionally that new technology, an old problem, and a big idea come together to make an innovation.

  • The technology of tomorrow is based on the science of today.

  • We can say with certainty that personal computers have become the most useful and empowering tools of our era. They are tools of communication, they are tools of creativity, and they can be customized by their users.

  • Passwords ought to be treated as you would your toothbrush. Make sure no one else uses them and replace them every six months.

  • My prediction is that an organic computer - a biological substance that acts as a semiconductor - will be the next major breakthrough. I am referring to genetics and computers coming together.

  • The focus of computing has shifted from computers to living.

  • Even though computers and computing are plentiful, human attention and time are in short supply.

By 2040, human intelligence will have multiplied a billion-fold. Those changes will be singular in nature. Machines are going to get smaller and smaller. They will ultimately go into our bodies and brains and make us healthier and smarter.

All in all, these are quite a few reflections on computers and technology that speak to their opportunity, importance, and efficiency.
